PREVIEW

Exhibition PREVIEW
September 14 to October 4

Preview is an opportunity to see the work done by three graduates of jewellery from Ar.Co,-Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual, in Lisbon, and one from the Royal College of Arts in London. Alexandra Rodrigues, Ana Margarida Carvalho e Sónia Graça concluded the Basic Study Plan in Jewellery at Ar.Co and Margarida Matos finished a MA in Jewellery at RCA, with a scholarship from Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, after terminating in 2004 the Basic Study Plan in Jewellery at Ar.Co.

These are four new proposals in the field of contemporary art jewellery. Simultaneously, each student developed their studies in schools that not only introduced them in this plastic expression’s area, but also gave them tools to explore, in an demanding and attentive way, an experimental and coherent work.

The work presented is the translation of ideas into small scale objects, which one can carry in the body. Jewels. Jewels that denounce an intimacy, a secret, a memory or a place. These are pieces, even though being objects for the body, define a relationship of affection, first of all with its creator and later on with its owner and wearer.

The four authors have a close relationship with their work. It is not possible to separate from their work, their experiences, their questions, doubts, quests, passions, obsessions, tastes. Everything is connected, everything interacts, maturates and is depured. Each one only needed an idea, a focus to develop a work that is always evolving and keeps being transformed.

"I only need my pen"

This statement from a Portuguese bussiness man in the 70s, shows powerful people’s signature importance in our society.

Using gold and steal, materials associated with the male universe, a recurring object in jewellery is recovered: The stamp ring.

To highlight the importance of a personal mark, the tier, a dominant element from the male world, is introduced in this work.
